Natural wood, honestly explained
Cedar Shake Roofing in Avondale Estates
A beautiful wood roof for the right house, with an honest explanation of what it asks of you.
What Cedar Gives You, and What It Asks
Cedar has a look nothing else quite matches, and on an older home with character it can be exactly right. But we would be doing you a disservice by only mentioning the good parts. It costs more to put on than shingles. It needs leaves and needles kept off it, especially under big trees. And being wood, it is never still: it fattens in rain and thins out in sun. Ignore that and a cedar roof cups, checks or decays long before it should. Here is the right way, which is our way. Every shake sits with a sliver of space at its edges for swelling. Each row is offset so the seams below stay buried under the piece above. A breathable sheet goes between rows, turning water while letting vapor out. Beneath it all, spaced boards or a ventilated mat carry air to the underside so the wood dries. Nails are stainless, so no rust streaks. Handled that way, cedar ages from honey gold to soft silver gracefully. Around Avondale Estates, with its historic houses and heavy canopy, cedar can suit a home beautifully, as long as you go in knowing the commitment. We install, replace and repair cedar roofs.
